On 24th September Lithuanian muslims as well as all the muslims around the world held the celebration of Eid al Adha (Kurban Bairam) – Feast of Sacrifice. Since the early morning which was unusually warm this year men, women and children started gathering in the mosques and Islamic centre in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, districts of Vilnius and Alytus. There were crowds of muslims around the places of Eid prayer, everyone could not find space inside of the mosques, thus few rows of muslims aligned on the prayer mats in front of the entrances to the mosques. All the community instantly focused on their prayer as the first words praising Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) echoed in their ears: “Allahu akbar!”. All of them were thanking Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) for His favours bestowed on them, asked to guide them and their families on the straight path, forgive their sins and accept their good deeds and sacrifices. After this prayer and sermon muslims were congratulating each other on this special day by wishing “Eid mubarak! Takabbal Allahu minna wa minkum”. Some stayed in the mosques for a little bit longer and tasted sweets and others hurried to perform another tradition of this Eid – offer a sacrifice of an animal.
Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) told:
“Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice.” (Qur’an, Surah Al-Kawthar, 108:2)
This year quite many muslims offered sacrifice – some chose to sacrifice sheeps or goats and some shared the sacrifice of the cows. Muslims of Vilnius, Elektrenai and Kaunas cooperated very well. Everyone hurried to bring back meat of sacrificed animals not only for their own family, but also to distribute it among poor muslims and non muslims or those who need it so that they would also feel the joy of this celebration by filling their stomachs with tasty food. All meat was distributed among members of community very quickly during the next few days. May Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) accept sacrifice of all of us.
Although weather on Saturday was cooler, this didn’t stop muslims from meeting up in the village of Nemezis where house of community next to their simple mosque was opened just few days before Eid. Public enterprise “Centre of Islamic education and culture” (Viesoji istaiga “Islamo svietimo ir kulturos centras”) organized shor event on occasion of Eid after which people tasted Uzbek pilav and listened to nasheeds which were performed by children.
On the same day celebration of Eid al Adha was organized in Kaunas by Public enterprise “Education and heritage” (viesoji istaiga “Svietimas ir paveldas”). Here women and children of different nationalities gathered for friendly conversations, special cake and funny games. The quiz about Eid and trying on hijabs from Turkey gave a nice accent to this celebration.
Thanks to all who organized such beautiful events, helped and participated in them. Celebrations strengthen unity and friendly relations of our community, thus we hope to cherish and improve such local traditions every year.
May Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) accept your and our good deeds and rewards all families with the goodness in this life and the Hereafter.
